Perhaps the largest and most striking of all species tulips. The flowers open wide during the sunny hours and stay closed on cloudy days. The picture is from my bulb field.

Unlike wimpy modern tulips, these tulips like to multiply and come back every year! And these are great news for those in warm climates: You can grow these! They grow well in the desert here in Arizona even where other tulips don't. The only place I don't think they would grow is tropical climates with no winter chill. Good drainage would be required in the Southeastern US for them to survive their summer dormancy. Some sources say plant them 6-8 inches deep, but I've had success planting them 2-3 inches deep. I think the main thing is to make sure they are below the freeze/thaw zone for your area.

ZONES:4-9
Flowering Period: Mid Spring
Plant Height:12-18 inches
Circumference of Bulb:5-6 cm
