Achimenes are related to African Violets and Gloxinia. They need rich, moist soil and shade. The gorgeous, funnel-shaped flowers, which come in an array of colors resemble pansies or petunias and grow from 1 to 3 inches in diameter

Winter hardy in zones 9+...maybe lower with mulch. They are easy to bring inside for the winter. You can just let them dry out and put the pot where it is cool but not cold. The bulbs are similar to miniature pine cones....about the size of puffed wheat.

Keep the rhizomes in a cool place until you want them to grow. Plant the rhizomes inside in early winter to late spring, barely covered with soil. Keep soil from drying out but don't water extensively until growth is active. Do not move outside until all danger of frost is past.

Note to past customers: Last year I sold these in summer but they had already started to dry out. I offered a refund or replacement for those that didn't grow. After further research I realized it is better to start them earlier in the year while the bulbs are fully dormant and healthy.
